I got news this week that my coach Ron had passed away.

To this day, he is the single most influential human being I have ever been around.

He taught me lessons 20+ years ago that I use every single day in my life.

And I am not the only one.  This is pretty much the norm for every athlete who wrestled for him.

As I reflected on his life and what it meant to so many, it got me thinking about exactly what made him so special.

  • Was it his infectious smile and personality?  He could light up a room when he walked in it, but this isn't the main reason.

  • Was it his unique techniques and training strategies?  He was also really good here, but still not what made him so memorable.

  • Was it his ability to get you prepared for competition?  He was the best I ever had, but this is not what his athlete's mention most.

These all mattered, but there was one thing that made him stand out and will always make him memorable to the people who were around him.

I was meeting with a member of my ETR Monthly Live coaching club recently and they told me, "I have fallen short on my new habit.  It is disappointing because I went 15 days straight and then missed."

My immediate gut reaction was, "Yeah, so what?!?!"

Before you jump to any conclusions, let me clarify what I meant here.  Everyone falls short.  No big deal.  Just hop back up and commit to your next 66-days.  Keep showing up until you lock in your habit and close the gap on your goals.

The thing I have learned is that even the most effective people on the planet fall short from time to time when pursuing new habits and aspirations.

The thing that makes these high-level human beings unique is that they learn not to take it personally.  Then they diminish their dwell time and get back to pursuing their desired outcomes in life.

In the epic historical movie Gladiator, Russell Crowe plays a character who is forced to fight in the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murders of his family and his emperor.

At one dramatic point in the movie, he takes out all of the challengers and yells at the top of his lungs to the audience, "Are you NOT entertained?!?!"

No, this podcast episode doesn't have anything to do with fighting.  Well, other than having a willingness to fight for the things that matter to you most!

But I do find myself thinking this statement when people tell me how they feel about their results and life.    

It is safe to say that most people are not currently entertained by their current situation in life.  Instead, I would say that a large chunk of people would like better in their lives.

In the past few weeks, I have noticed a trend in the people I have been working with.  In coaching, courses, challenges...I keep hearing the same thing from people: I didn't do it.

These were good people that intended to follow through on their intentions, but something kept coming up.  For one person, it was focus that stopped them from taking action.  For another it was a busy schedule that got in the way.

Then there was Spring Break.  Vacation came and habits were completely out the door.  In all of these instances, the things that mattered most took a back seat to convenience.  And there is ALWAYS a cost when this happens.

It's Time to Talk Technology...

As I rode the elliptical this week at the gym, I listened to music to get myself in a creative state.  I have learned from experience that this is one of the ways I generate my best thoughts. For some reason, my mind kept coming back to recent conversations with people.  These included friends, clients, event planners, and business owners.  They all centered around challenges they were facing. There were three trends that kept emerging: Focus, motivation, and frustration.  Most of these people were experiencing undesirable emotions because of a lack of focus and motivation.  As I reflected on these outcomes, I kept asking myself "WHY?" with emotional intensity. Eventually the answer why so many people are failing to get desirable outcomes came to me.  It was technology.  I realized that this single area is robbing our ability to live to potential. The Performance Secret
ENERGY. It is one of the few things that all high performers have in common.  This is the case regardless of their background.  This makes it the performance secret to EXTRAordinary. Think about it.  CEO's need it to drive results.  Athletes need it to perform at peak levels.  And parents need it to pour into their kids so they can teach them lessons to elevate their lives. Then why does it allude so many people?  Why is it that so many solid people say that they just feel drained on a consistent basis?  Why does passion seem to be such a rare occurrence in our society? Because most people have never approached ENERGY as something to pursue.  They have not created baselines to emphasize and pursue on a consistent basis.  This is where we start.

The TEDx Talk Perspective

Every single day, we make choices on how to respond to our environment.  The problem is that we often make them unconsciously based on previously established, counterproductive habits. Let me give you an example I see on a consistent basis.  A person goes out to pursue a goal that they are passionate about.  They take action and don't get immediate results. Rather than digging in and seeing this tension as a part of the process, they get frustrated and stop taking action.  They often tend to take the lack of results personally. This response leads to negative emotions that impact all parts of our lives.  And we tend to do this with a wide range of situations in our lives.  But it doesn't have to be this way. How EXCUSES and DREAMS are Connected

While we don't often realize it, these two things are directly connected in our lives every single day.  When we say this out loud, it makes complete sense. Yet we get so caught up in our daily lives that we don't even consider this fact. Here is the reality. Every person on the planet has moments of clarity when they see things they would love to achieve in their lives.  The problem is that people don't tend to act on them. Why? Because deep down we don't believe we can achieve them.  So we subconsciously find "reasonable" excuses that allow us to settle.  This is when dreams slowly start to disappear without us even knowing it. Losing your ability to dream is alone an outcome worthy of fighting to avoid.  However, there is another consequence when you make excuses.  In the place of dreams comes disappointment that impacts every aspect of our life. I Was Definitely Nervous

I had prepared for my TEDx Talk for months. From the moment I found out I had been accepted to give one, I had prepared for the opportunity. For the first month, I dove into creating a crazy profound topic that would impact people. And once that was in place, I practiced every single day on my delivery. Then I arrived in Hilliard for the event for rehearsal and felt some nerves coming on. As I watched the other speakers, I realized I was definitely a little nervous. There is no doubt that this showed in my practice talk as I lost my place at one point in the talk. I left realizing I needed to adjust.

Transformational Shift: How I Changed My Approach

Leaving the facility, I stopped and went through my normal "emotion interrupt process." This is when I realized my focus was all wrong. My problem was that I was worried too much about what the talk would mean for me. Through a series of situations, I shifted my mindset back to focusing on giving and growing. Getting back to my two top core values was exactly what I needed to do to deliver my talk at a high level. I felt GREAT during the talk and LOVED the process! HTML tutorial Uncomfortable sparks potential. This is not a concept that I always understood. Certainly not in the way that I outline it in this podcast episode. The reality is that most people avoid uncomfortable at all costs in our society. Why? We are taught that things should come easily and instantly. I have to admit that I fall into this category at times. In fact, this is exactly what I was doing recently with my health and fitness. First, there were injuries that held me up from working out. Next, I got lazy with my diet and put on about 5 extra pounds. Finally, I justified it and settled for less than acceptable results.

The Turning Point

Lucky for me, I had a trip to California where I stayed with a coach who is in GREAT shape.  He asked me to go for a run in the morning and pushed the pace hard. But the coolest thing happened in the process. I realized that I did not like the gap in my fitness level and made a decision to do something about it. Now I am back on track!
